Knysna SPLASH, the annual water festival presented by Knysna Rotary, will be back on Saturday, 19 and Sunday, 20 December with three fun-filled events for the whole family.
Now in its fourth year, Knysna SPLASH is an important fundraiser for Rotary, which donates all proceeds from the entry fees to local charities. This year, Knysna SPLASH will focus on the two most popular events – the Knysna Lagoon Mile swim and the SPLASH Quack Attack duck race – and introduce two new canoe events: the SPLASH Family Fun Canoe Race and the SPLASH 10km Canoe Race.
Registration will open on Saturday, 19 December at 8:00 in the Loft at the Knysna Yacht Club for the Knysna Lagoon Mile Swim (1600m) and the Junior Swim (450m).
The Lagoon Mile starts at 10:30 at the Knysna Yacht Club hobie slipway. The course goes around the Yacht Club, turns right into the small harbour, goes under the bridge, around the Quays island and back to the finish at the hobie slipway.
The Junior Swim starts at the same time and place and goes around the Yacht Club into the harbour, but finishes at the John Benn slipway.
Each participant’s time will be recorded. Swimmers who complete the one mile course will receive a medal. There will be special medals in each race category for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The winners in each male and female category will receive cash prizes.
Entry fee for 10 and under is R75. For 16 & under, open & under 40, and over 40 the entry fee is R130. Caps are compulsory for the swim and can be bought for R60.
On Saturday, 19 December at 15:00, find a good spot on the harbour walls at the Quays for the SPLASH Quack Attack, a fun yellow duck race for up to 1,000 ducks! Buy a numbered duck for R25 and watch it compete in the heats. The idea is for the tide and wind to encourage the ducks to ‘swim’ along the water canal under the bridge. Racing will consist of 5 or more heats with the first 10 from each heat racing in the final.
The first duck wins R 2,500; there’s R 1,000 for 2nd place; and R500 for 3rd , 4th and 5th places.
Ducks will be on sale at the Knysna Mall and the Waterfront on Saturday, 12 December, at the Waterfront practice on Friday, 18 December from 15:00, and from 10:00 on Saturday, 19 December.
SPLASH Canoe Races
Two new canoe races are planned for Sunday, 20 December, starting in the channel in front of Sirocco and Quay Four on Thesen Islands. Lifejackets are compulsory for both events!
The Family Fun Canoe Race, with its Pirates of the Caribbean theme, is a one-mile race open to all paddle craft including K1s, K2s and K3s, single and double surfskis, sea kayaks, fishing kayaks, Indian canoes, plastic canoes, guppies and SUPs. Registration is at 7:30 and there is a briefing at 8:30. The race starts at 9:00 and there will be prize-giving at 10:30 with prizes for various categories, as well as the best dressed craft and crew. The entry fee is R50 per paddler.
Registration for the 10km Canoe Race will start at 9:45, with a briefing at 10:45 and race start at 11:00. This race is open to racing kayaks and surf skis only. It will consist of two 5km laps through Thesen Islands and out into Ashmead Channel, with a portage on Leisure Isle and back in at the Parks Board entrance. The entry fee is R100 per paddler and prize-giving is at 12:30.
Knysna Rotary spokesperson, Mick Furman, said that he is looking forward to seeing both locals and visitors to the town participating in the SPLASH festival. “It promises to be lots of fun for the whole family, competitors and spectators, and it’s for a great cause.”
