Andrew Thompson (26) who played in Afrikaans movies such as Bakgat, Superhelde and Roepman has died. According to reports, Thompson committed suicide in Johannesburg today (Saturday 10 March 2012). He was discovered by a friend in his flat. Thompson also played the role of Theunis “Rubbish” Van Rooyen in the popular Afrikaans sitcom, Molly & Wors on KykNET. Andrew graduated from Hoërskool Linden in 2004 and attended seven years of drama classes at Louise van Niekerk. He later studied a B.A. Drama at TUT, in 2006.
The entertainment industry is in shock. Lizz Meiring, who played alongside Thompson in Molly & Wors, wrote the following on Facebook:
” I am devastated by the news that our dear Andrew has passed away. Andrew and I acted together when he was still in Standard 9 in the series ‘Hart Van Staal’. We became good friends. He was an exceptionally talented actor, writer, film maker, artist and a clever and gentle soul. I am so sorry for his friends, his wonderful parents and sister”.
Meiring ended with the words: “Rest in Peace my dear Andrew- where you are now, you can create every movie and theater play you always wanted to without worrying about budgets. I will miss you terribly”. Henk Pretorius, writer and director of the Bakgat 1 & 2 movies, said: “To The Man who invented SKER, a good friend and a great actor. You will be missed!”.
Pretorius refers to the popular phrase “SKER Kwagga” used in the Bakgat movies.
